Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about industrial hearing testing, BC regulations, and our services.
What does a hearing test involve? ▼
You will be seated in a sound-deadened booth and wear earphones. The audiometric technician sends a series of tones through the earphones to one ear and then the other. You signal when you hear each tone. Your responses are recorded on a graph called an audiogram. The entire test, including counseling, takes approximately 15–20 minutes.
Who needs annual hearing tests? ▼
Under BC's OHS Regulation, any worker exposed to noise exceeding 85 dBA Lex (8-hour average) must receive annual hearing tests. Employers must provide an initial test within 6 months of employment and a test at least once every 12 months thereafter.
Is A.A. Audio Lab authorized by WorkSafeBC? ▼
Yes. We are Industrial Audiometric Business (IAB) #002, authorized by WorkSafeBC for both fixed-location and mobile facility testing. Our technicians are fully trained and certified through BCIT programs.
Do you come to our worksite? ▼
Yes. We operate the largest fleet of modern dual-booth mobile hearing testing trucks in Canada. We bring our testing units directly to your facility anywhere in British Columbia, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How many employees can you test per day? ▼
Our trucks test 2 employees every 15 minutes. The number tested per day depends on your shift schedule and how many trucks we deploy to your site.
How much does hearing testing cost? ▼
Pricing varies based on the number of employees, location, and services required. Contact us for a customized quote. We serve clients ranging from under 100 to several thousand employees.
What industries do you serve? ▼
We serve a wide range of industries including construction, forestry, mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, transportation, government, and agriculture. Any workplace with noise exposure over 85 dBA requires testing.
Do you provide hearing protection fittings? ▼
Yes. We provide individual hearing protection evaluations and custom fittings based on each employee's noise exposure and personal fit requirements. We distribute custom ear impressions and plugs.
What is a Hearing Conservation Program? ▼
A written program required by BC OHS Regulation 7.5 that includes: noise measurement, education and training, engineered noise control, hearing protection, posting of noise hazard areas, hearing tests, and annual program review. We help employers develop and maintain these programs.
How do I submit hearing test results to WorkSafeBC? ▼
As an authorized IAB, we handle the submission of all hearing test results to WorkSafeBC through their secure Hearing Test Submission (HTS) system. You do not need to submit them yourself.
What is the noise exposure limit in BC? ▼
The limit is 85 dBA Lex for an 8-hour period (daily noise exposure), or an equivalent noise dose of 1 Pascal-squared-hour (Pa²h). For impact noises, the peak sound level of 140 dBC cannot be exceeded.
How long has A.A. Audio Lab been in business? ▼
We were established in 1976 and have been serving British Columbia employers for over 45 years.
